Tunnels Beach is a public beach, open year-round, 24 hours a day. There are lots of big trees nearby for you to get shade while you take in the beautiful view. Parking fills us very fast at this beach, but it is well worth the effort to get there early when you think about the experiences on offer.
Makua Valley holds cultural significance for Native Hawaiians, so be sure to remain respectful. Avoid trespassing on sacred sites and follow all instructions on posted signage.
Tunnels Beach houses a variety of sensitive sea life and wildlife including sea turtles, Hawaiian monk seals, and native birds. The Hawaiian monk seal, one of the world’s rarest marine mammals, occasionally rests on the shores of Tunnels Beach. These seals are protected under Hawaiian law, and beachgoers are encouraged to keep a respectful distance if they encounter one.

Swimming in the ocean

Sometimes, the stronger waves and currents make swimming more challenging. So always remember to check the conditions before a dip. Plus, try to avoid standing on the reef – go along with some water shoes or swimming fins so you don’t stretch up your skin.
Take a Stroll
Take a relaxing stroll along the shores, and savour the stunning mountain backdrop. The peaceful sound of waves makes this the perfect place to unwind. And if you prefer to stay put, spread out a towel and enjoy a zen sunbathing session.
Snorkelling excursions
Tunnels Beach has a legendary snorkelling scene. Guided snorkelling and diving tours are popular at the beach. A local guide, Dalidreams described the beach as:

Things to note to prepare for your next visit
If you’re going to visit, keep that in mind and try to avoid doing anything that could harm the ecological life. So definitely take your trash with you, check the labels on your sunscreen to ensure it is reef-safe, and follow all instructions while exploring the waters to protect the ocean life.
Also, if you choose to go snorkelling without a guide, keep in mind that snorkelling is now restricted in some areas of the large inner reef area known as the Makua Lagoon to protect the fish nursery there. You’ll know exactly what to avoid because markers will be placed on the reef at the four corners of the prohibited area.
For locations with sensitive biodiversity, unfamiliar animals can tip the balance. So while Makua Beach is a popular destination, it’s important to note that dogs are not permitted on the beach. Absolutely keep that in mind when you’re planning your trip.
Parking is a big concern at Tunnels Beach, but there is always a super attentive lifeguard and accessible restrooms. Try booking a hotel or Airbnb close enough to the beach so you don’t have to worry about parking.
There are also a few picnic tables in a grass area, and the beach is a quick walk to the sand. Also, there’s a food truck with delicious meals, which makes up for the lack of restaurants or stores within walking distance.
The beach can be enjoyed in all seasons and summer is prime time for swimming and snorkelling. From November to April, the stronger currents and winter waves make the water unsuitable for swimming, but it’s perfect for surfers who troop in to ride the wave or tourists who simply come to watch the skilled surfers while they have fun.
